Feline Friday - 8/30/19

Did you know?
I'm famous!!!

The Arts Council put my close up in their latest newsletter to advertise Momma's upcoming hexie exhibit with her hexie friends.

Then the local weekly paper did a quick story after Momma did a hexie demo at the Farmers' Market, also with a nod to the exhibit which will be hung next Wednesday. They totally spelled my name wrong but I guess it doesn't matter.  Well, it might matter if my neighbors see my picture and try to call me and I ignore them. Maybe they will just think I'm ignoring them like I usually do...

=====================================================================
For anyone nearly local - Please come to Momma's exhibit. I hope you'll pose with my pawtrait!

Backing the dolly quilts

I didn't take pictures of the next 3 quilts after they were sandwiched but I did add them to the pile that needs quilting. Ugh. There are now 6 doll quilts that need quilting, which just seems like an overwhelming pile, and I hope to get the last two either sandwiched or close this weekend. I've got 51 days until my next trunk show. I can do it!

We won't mention the new doll quilt I started last week. Chantal said I deserved a new quilt since Mr Serious was finished so I ran with it and picked something from one of my hexie Pinterest boards. I should have a picture for you next week...

My math skills weren't quite up to par on this backing. I was trying to use as much of the horse fabric as possible, knowing that I would still need to add an orange strip to the middle. Didn't figure on then needing to add a prussian blue strip to get the math right, finally. The sides of this quilt will be cut straight and bound in the dark raspberry color. The top/bottom will have a hexie facing, allowing the hexie shape to remain. Any quilting ideas for this one?

This backing was a nice recovery as there was no math involved. LOL. I am using the teal for the "binding" but I'm not yet decided if it will be a true binding or a facing. I think I am going to quilt an outline of the "circles" the kaleidoscopes create.

The colors for this design started with a scrap pack from one of the LQSs.
It was pure luck that the Tula Pink fabric also matched perfectly.
And - woot! - the blue binding is already made!

This project started with 4 FQs and then I added in more of the purple to get it squared off. Not having much of any of the fabric left I was forced to go shopping to buy backing fabric. #Thestruggleisreal

I've finally decided to have the basket bottoms towards the center but the 4 blocks alone are not big enough for a doll quilt. Since I was forced to go buy the yellow backing for the previous quilt I also found some fabrics that should work with this. The blocks have 4 golds and 4 greens - I was able to get more of one of the greens but had to get a new gold. The burgundy isn't quite right but it had the same gold as the green so I ran with it.

Wednesday Weather Report #119 - 8/28/19

I have to say that Fall is definitely creeping in. Not only are the day temps on the low side but my yard is already turning yellow with the falling leaves.

August 21 - 27, 2019
80 - 68 - 69 - 62 - 71 - 72 - 70 F

This past Friday was my second to last no-housework-Friday and I made good use of the time in my quilt lab by making backings and sandwiching quilts. I will share the others tomorrow but for today's weather report I thought you would like to see the 2018 weather quilt!!!

The quilting will be quilt simple with vertical lines along each inner point of the elongated hexies and horizontally thru the outer points of the hexie. I am using black thread for lack of wanting to change every inch or so but I think the black adds to the stunning contrast of black and the bright colors. I think I'll add the first letter of each month above the columns and add 2018 to the top or bottom somehow. I do have a few buttons picked out which I had planned to add for certain holidays, first snow, my birthday, etc, to make it easier to compare year to year but I'm so in awe of this as is that I am second guessing myself and haven't truly decided yet. What do you think about the button idea? Yay or Nay?

HeLP for Hexie-ologists - 8/17/19

Happy Hexie Saturday!

Just a quick update on a couple projects I’ve worked on during the fair.

Finishing 3 blocks doesn’t look like much but I also prepped a lot of the pieces for the remaining blocks.

It’s a good thing I posted this pic cuz it wasn’t until I typed the above sentence that it clicked that I need 5 blocks and not 6. Geesh that was close.

I also finished this quilt, pulled the papers, pressed them and put them away. Now to pick a backing. I’ve eliminated 1 of the 3 shown and was leaning towards one but Chantal is leaning towards the other. Which would u pick & why?

And now it’s your turn! Please link to your hexie project in the comments below. Any vintage project, paper shape or construction method counts.

August 7-13, 2019
67 - 67 - 72 - 68 - 73 - 80 - 75 F

This is not your typical fair week weather. It's been quite comfy which is kinda weird when it appears the crowds are smaller than normal.

(insert drumroll!!!!)

Yay!!!! I won a blue ribbon for Mr Serious!!

Hey Momma - I think you should take a break from stitching my quilt facing.

How about I sit right here and you pet me for a bit?!

Thanks!

Wednesday Weather Report #116 - 8/7/19

July 31, 2019 : 76 F
August 1-6, 2019 : 78 - 80 - 77 - 75 - 80 - 83 F
Not much to say about this week's weather...the nights are getting cooler and the days are pretty comfortable which is kind of a surprise since August days are usually pretty uncomfortable.

As I'm typing, I'm thinking that I haven't really shared any pics of the quilting on Mr Serious.  I'll have to rectify that soon. In the meantime, know that I am nearly done with the quilting and already have the facing completed.

Sadly I am having machine troubles which means the quilting is taking longer than expected. I've completed quilting the red, brown, yellow and black sections, which just leaves the white - which is was over half done this morning.

I'm kind of thinking it's the spool of thread causing the problem as I've been using the same brand for 15 years and I quilted the rest of the quilt sans issues. I have even switched to machine piecing this week without any issue. And yes I've turned the machine on/off, re-threaded, cleaned *everything* I can get to, changed the needle twice, wiped everything clean/re-oiled 700 times and even switched to a different bobbin. The only thing I cannot do is switch to a different spool as I have to order this thread and want to have the quilt completed by this weekend to enter it in the fair. The quilting looks fine, I'm just tying and hiding lots of knots as the thread keeps breaking. I'm getting really good at tying and hiding knots :)

The bibliophile Files - 8/6/19

You can always tell when I've been on vacation(s) as my finished book list is nice and long :)

FINISHED:
     Cemetery Road
     Olivia Twist
     Along Came a Spider
Astray - a fun collection of short stories about various people who have crossed a line.
     Destroyer Angel
     Only Us
Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass
Othello - maybe not the best choice for mountain climbing in the heat...I spent much of the hike saying "WTF just happened?" I don't think I'm a Shakespeare aficionado.
The Silent Patient - excellent twist at the end!
A Night Divided - a story about a family split by the Berlin Wall. I had never read about the wall from this perspective so it was interesting.
Tear Down This Wall: A City, A President, and the Speech that ended the Cold War - I expected this to be solely about President Reagan's speech but it gave a lot of the background before he gave his famous speech.
     Heretics Anonymous
     Roses are Red
The Brass Verdict - from the series that inspired The Lincoln Lawyer movie. Can't wait to re-watch the movie and see how it fits the books.
My Name is Not Friday - the story of a 12 year old free black orphan sold into slavery and his fight to get back to his only brother
Urge to Kill - funny there is no indication on the box that this is book 3 in a series. Guess I better add the rest of the series to my to read list...
     Look Alive 25

IN PROGRESS:
     on my iPhone: The Reversal
on my home stereo: The Endless Beach

And now it's your turn - please let us know in a (linked) post on your blog or in the comments below, what you have been reading. Anything counts: novel, magazine, quilt pattern or cereal box!
