Feline Friday - 10/30/20

Wanna see my Halloween Costume?!

Ok - so that's not really my costume - either one of them. Momma tried to get photos last night but I wasn't having it, despite liking one of them 2 weeks ago. 

Gotta keep Momma on her toes right? 

She thinks she'll get a picture tomorrow for next week's post. I'm pretty sure all she is gonna get is a cranky cat cuz she never lets me outside on Halloween. 

Wednesday Weather Report #180 - 10/28/20

 Y'all are in trouble now...

Long story, short, several college students stopped in to my office yesterday with questions on some old buildings in the town where I work. I was telling Dad about it later and he said I should bring in his binder of antique postcards to show them when they come back. That gave me the idea to use the postcards along with the current pictures I've been taking to make the weather reports more interesting. 

I only had this idea about 30 minutes ago so today's photos won't have much history but I'll try to do better next time. Dad also has several binders of cards for the town where I live so there will be lots of old pictures to come. 

This card, postmarked 1911, shows Main Street between Lake and Covington Streets. I didn't bring my loupe with me to study the photo but I'm pretty sure the awning says there was a grocery store on the corner. The second store from the left is probably a ladies dress shop. It appears to be a dirt road and there are several horse drawn wagons for transportation. The church steeple in the background is no longer there - maybe some day I'll share some church photos.

There is no postmark or date on the above card but I would guess 1950s or 60s based on the clothes and cars. The Perry Fire Department is shown in some kind of parade. You can now see the grocer has been replaced with Rexall Drugs on the corner and then Family Furniture. 

I hope you giggle, as I did, about the mini cars while I was trying to take the panograph. Family Furniture now spans three store fronts. To the right is an insurance business and then a hair salon to complete the block. 

I quick ran over to the Furniture store to try to get some dates for the color postcard or when they opened or expanded but the gal on hand didn't have answers. If I find out, I will add them to the post.

Wednesday Weather Report #179 - 10/21/20

After last weekend's frost and the voluminous rain this week, it appears it's time to bite the bullet and put my ADK chair away for the winter. I know, it's also time to rake leaves but we need to dry out first...

This week's hexies show that we have definitely moved on to fall. Yet we also have a few snow showers predicted for next week. The temps aren't really supposed to be that low so I won't hold my breath on the first snow of the year.

Eek! I bought myself a birthday gift! I've always stayed away from BOM programs as they seem expensive but when I saw how many different Tula fabrics were included in this kit (that I wouldn't have to buy individually) and the color placement was all planned out it was a no brainer for me. It'll be an easy project with little thinking on my part. Sounds like a good plan for what I'm sure my favorite (and only) brother will now call an "over the hill" quilter. LOL. 

And I'm wayyyyy behind on sharing but over the Columbus Day/Indigenous People's Weekend I finally pulled the papers and spray basted this doll quilt. The colored triangles were a swap from Hexie Club and then I added my own neutral to bring it all together.

So many papers to pull.
And now to press them all for reuse.
I have 2 more kaleidoscope projects planned.

It's always a bonus when you have the perfect
 sized batting chunk just waiting for a purpose.

I couldn't resist - it matches the colors on the front perfectly and it's cats.
I really could have just started and stopped with it being cats. Right?!

Wednesday Weather Reports #177 & 178 - 10/14/20

 Clearly job#2 is getting in the way of my stitching and social media time. I just have to remember it will finish soon and I can get back to "normal".

The storm (much more ominous in person) I wanted to share with last week's report. I just love the contrast of a dark sky with bright fall leaf colors.

The Bibliophile Files - 10/6/20

 It was another productive month of reading audiobooks! 

I finished my 75th book yesterday which makes me 7 books ahead of schedule for my annual ready goal. Woohoo! 

I really need to not worry at the beginning of every year that I am behind schedule as I am usually ahead of schedule by year end. Let's see if I remember that come March...

     Let me Lie - a good psych thriller
     Luckiest Girl Alive - This is the story of what I perceive to be an unlucky kid, partly from her own doing, who grows up into a privileged, engaged young woman. A woman I loved and hated for what she did to herself, what she blossomed into and how she hid behind her privilege.
     The Bone House 
     A 1,000 Moons
     8 Perfect Murders - as a new employee at a bookstore, the now-owner was supposed to write a blog to entice purchases. Someone is now using his old list of 8 perfect murders to get away with murder! If I get my act together, I would love to read those 8 referenced books/plays.
     Break in Case of Emergency - Toby's mother committed suicide 5 years ago and she plans for her own suicide before she hears her long-missing father is coming to visit. In the end he steps up and her friends support her in her time of need.
     Season of Fear - If you don't mind getting confused in a book, then this is the one for you! It's the sequel to a 2 book series but it's really a stand alone book with only 1 carry over character.
     The Party Upstairs - a book that supposedly takes place over a single day but in reality is mostly backstory to explain what is happening in that one day. It's a modern take on upstairs-downstairs mentality with a  happy ending for the downstairs people.
     Mrs Lincoln's Sisters - this is the first non-quilt book I've read by Chiaverini so maybe there is another book in her historical-fiction repertoire that has Mrs Lincoln's side of the story but I felt that info was the huge elephant in the room for this book.
     Red at the Bone - goodreads.com suggested this short book as a quick read towards my reading goal. Each section of the book is from the perspective of a different family member surrounding the coming-of-age ceremony of 16 year old Melody, a girl who is now older than her mother when she gave birth to Melody. I still haven't figured out where the title came from...

     Firestorm - I found this book while looking for another with a similar title. It's a good thriller but borderline a little too fanciful for me with mindreading and starting fires from a distance.

A Peachy Monday

I thought I should finally start to share the 3 hexie projects I started in the last few months. One of them is a mini-POTC made with 1/2" honeycombs, one is a HST group project for Hexie Club and then there is this one...

Shortly after I shared pictures of the Mrs Peach quilt with Chantal, she said she would do it with me(!), so we both jumped on it. The original had different colored pairs of stripes, fussycut florals for the octagons and All The Scraps for the "rectangles". It was a wild quilt to say the least. Instead, I'm using this fun Dia de Los Muertos cat fabric and each block will have 8 different but coordinating bright fabrics. The corners will be filled in with fussy cut white on black fabrics. 

The pink block is about one quarter finished thanks to Hexie Club last Friday. I have the green and red blocks kitted, yellow needs to have the last few fabrics fussy cut and I think I need to find 1 more blue fabric. Then I'll have to figure out what colors to use next - I'm thinking peach and lilac would be nice but after that I have no idea yet. The paper kit makes 12 blocks but I'm thinking I'll need at least 2 to 3 times that many for a decent sized quilt. That's a lot of color combos to come up with. Eek!

Phooey, I just remembered I was going to stop at a non-local store this past weekend to see if they had more of the DdLM fabric. I have a decent chunk now but I'm cutting it into some serious Swiss cheese for the blocks and don't expect to have much left to use for borders or the back. On the other hand, I have yards and yards of that mind altering B&W stripe so I'm hoping there is enough for a stripey binding.
