Hey Momma -
I can help you rearrange these blocks so the geometric design show up better!
I'm such a good boy!

Design Wall Monday - 7/18/16

I had another productive weekend! I'm not referring to mowing the weeds or doing the dishes but I bet you knew that!

On Saturday I was able to finish 4 more trip around the world blocks. I never took a photo so you'll need to believe me on that. I have just 3 blocks more to go!!

On Sunday I worked at The Co-Op for a few hours. There were only 3 customers which gave me lots of concentrated time to listen to an audiobook on the iPhone and stitch.

Watch out for this owl - he was winking at Janet yesterday...

First I finished this very last rose star!!!! I did get it pressed this morning so if this evening goes well, I plan to lay them out this evening. I kept making stars until I ran out of my 12 FQs so it won't be until I lay it out that I'll figure out how big it is...

Banana fabric was a last minute find in the ADK. Fun!!

Once I finished the star, I stitched up this banana "cog"....

...and then moved to a blue "sparkle" which was finished this morning. OK, I lied. I have one last seam in this to finish and then I can add the green "leaves" at opposite sides of the rosette.

I was going to count all the rosettes as I made them but needing 77 blue and 77 yellow, I am sure it's going to take quite some time to make that many. I'll count them at the end of the year, maybe bagging 10 or 20 at a time or some such idea. In the meantime I'll just enjoy playing with my fabrics.

Vacation Sewing

Why is there always so much "overtime" required before and after a vacation to take the actual vacation? It seems like I've just been go go go all week to make up for a few days off. Maybe after today I'll be caught up...

Sew...my vacation...was 5 days camping in the ADK Mts (which included a 3 day weekend and holiday), 1 day at home, 1 loooooong day at work and then a 3 day weekend. Three day weekends are a summer staple at my job = lucky me!! I'll share pictures of the Mts next week. I have to do that ASAP cuz before I'll be camping again before the end of the month and we don't want to get things all confused...

All y'all know that I took hexies camping but I am going to save them for the Hexie Linky Party this coming Sunday. Instead I'll show you the UFO I pulled out over the weekend.

The way that Dad constructed my cutting table allows
me to hang my 20 trips blocks from a pants hangar

It took a while to get my mojo in motion. Because of the bronchitis I didn't do much on any given day and lying around like a log lump was about my top speed until Saturday afternoon when all the sudden I was inspired and pulled out my looooooooooooong ignored Scrappy Trails project. Feel free to check the TATW label to see my other blocks and the funky layout I've created.

I finished 3 more blocks over the weekend...

yes - they all have a yellow down the center!

I have another block in the works and you can see the 3 others waiting for their final stitching in the background.

I think I only need 2 or 3 more blocks to finish this.

And what's a girl to do when she's stitching but work on leader-enders as well!! I stitched up 3 sets of pieced hexies for Mickey Depre's project over the weekend as well!

Not a bad vacation weekend once I finally got my act in gear!

Trippy Tuesday

Not sure why I'm so in to my Scrappy Trips project lately but I've got a rhythm going and I'm making lotsa progress, especially thanks to my tiny helper holding down this stack of blocks.

I was originally going to do a standard ST quilt but then I started playing in EQ7. That's like just having a little look-see at Pinterest ... it goes on and on and on until someone cries uncle!

I ended up with the above design, using 20 blocks.

Yesterday, as I was preparing the last 5 blocks I pulled up the EQ file to make sure I remembered the block count correctly and started playing again. Very quickly I decided that one more row and one more column would show my funky layout much better.

I layed out the finished blocks this morning. I'm not sure the design is as prominent in scrappy colors but I think if I use some brighter yellows for the rest of the blocks and arrange some of these "darker" blocks at outside corners, I can make the design stand out. What do you think?

Thinking about it now, I should have used just 1 fabric for the center. *IF* I ever make another (and I can't believe I'm saying this considering I didn't like this project a few weeks ago) I would try using just one fabric.

Oh and go ahead and steal my design, you know you wanna, but you have to promise to show me the quilt that you make from it :^)

Thursday Mashup

Today is just a mash-up of things that happened in the last few days...

I had to test out the panoramic feature of my new iphone at quilt guild this week. Not bad for the first one, altho it's a little hard to tell it's panoramic. We had just finished making charity quilts from the guild's stash - you can see a couple samples in the photo. We also revealed our secret sisters. Once again I received some lovely gifts and I'll try to post them another day. I would like to again thank anyone who sent a postcard to my SS. She thought it was a lot of fun and told me I must have lots of friends and I do! Thank you all!

Auntie Lauren, if you're out there - thank you for the new catnip toys!!!

Last night and this morning I wanted a mindless project to work on...Scrappy Trip was just the ticket. I finished up 3 more blocks so I now have 9 done. Can't remember how many I am planning on but I'll be happy when it's done. It's not my fav pattern to sew strips together to cut them apart to sew them back together. It is going to be a great quilt tho!

I finished the pineapple star for my Salt&Pepper project. Wait until you see the bicycle fabric I have!

I also finished 6 more triangles for this Star Blossom table topper...just 6 more to go and I can complete the top. I'm thinking in the next week or so with some holiday sitting-on-my-butt time I can get this top done :^)

After the last bazaar on Saturday I'll need to start working on 2 class samples. One is my design, for which I already have the fabric, and the other I still need to design to teach HST for a quilting 102 class.

I hope y'all have been working on fun projects!

Cat Braids

This little quilt has been on my design wall forever. You think I'm joking, I can tell.

I was gifted the cat panel (about 10x10.5") for Christmas 2008 and I stuck in on the far side of the Design Wall waiting for inspiration. Last year I finally decided to copy the braids of the panel as the border and was lucky enough to find the right colors at the LQS.

At some point I posted a pic of the 4 braids and the panel and asked for public opinion. Erin (a non-quilter at the time) told me that it needed a brown border, colored similar to the cat, but the quilt stayed on the design wall for months.  This past weekend I finally decided it was time to finish this little gem and I agree that it's much better even tho the brown isn't a perfect match.

My question for y'all now is how to draw this up in EQ??!! I tried for a while and finally just used graph paper to figure out measurements because I couldn't find a non-overcomplicated way to do the partial borders. TIA!

And, thanks to a great tip from Janet, I was able to finish a second TATW block in record time. I still think it's fiddly to sew together, cut it, frog it and sew it back together (I know how the Hawaiians felt) but I think it's looking good and will continue to make more blocks.

Janet's tip? Lay out the tubes ahead of time so that the seam you need to frog is at the top (or pick any side) of the layout and then just frog away...no having to *remember* which one you just did. I know, you would think I could remember during the 5 seconds it takes to frog...but I can't and that's that!

Design Wall Monday - 2/4/13

I putzed around the house this weekend between the cold weather and feeling crummy. I did finish up several small quilt tops, which I'll show you later this week and (of course) I worked on hexies but I also continued prepping for retreat by cutting basket blocks for leader enders and I also made my first Trip Around the World Block.

I found the TATW block just a tad fiddly - and I'll be honest, it's entirely because I frogged 2 strips sets apart at the wrong place so that I had to resew and then frog them in a different spot. Hopefully the next block will be easier. I am not yet 100% sure this is coming on retreat with me as I want something a bit relaxing...I'll have to make a few more blocks to see if it gets easier.

No matter what, I am happy to share my one TATW block on my clearest-it's-been-in-months design wall :^)
