Feline Friday Special Edition - 11/23/18

Today is a very special Thanksgiving edition of Feline Friday! I'm going to share all the cats in my life that I've been thankful for and I hope that a lot of people will be joining in with blog posts or comments on their furry children.

I've had 8 cats in my life and that's not counting the friendly strays or cats of friends and neighbors. Be sure to check the links for more pictures and gotcha stories on each cat.

My first cat, Fluffy, was dumped off at the end of our driveway when I was a kid. We lived in the country and sadly this seemed to be a normal occurrence. Fluffy, a long haired calico, was named by my little brother and she gave birth to tiny kittens in the attic just a couple days later. We found homes for the kittens (I cried) and then eventually had to find a home for Fluffy as my brother was allergic. I don't have any pictures of Fluffy given that most of my parent's photos are on slides!

Marbles

My next cat was as a 20-something living in Miami. We had just moved there and this friendly black & white cat was hanging around our apartment building. I eventually brought her inside and later learned that she had "ran" out of a neighbors apartment and they had never tried to bring her back inside. They gave me "permission" to adopt her - as if I was gonna give her back. I named her Marbles because she was mostly white with a few random black spots and I couldn't very well call a cat Spot  - that was too dog like.

Tula
8/12/02 - 5/15/10

Pepper
8/12/02 - 9/9/13

My next cats came as a mother and son pair. I worked at the University of Miami at the time and when we came in to work Monday morning someone had dropped them off overnight. I quickly convinced my roommate to let me adopt them and brought Tula and Pepper home. Pepper was still nursing and still had tiny little blue eyes. Tula was a Main Coon mix and Pepper was a Main Coon mix mix. They were both large cats with gorgeous long fur. I jokingly talked to them in Spanish instead of English - it was a Miami thing. They both moved with me to NY where we didn't have quite as much sun to sit in but I think they liked it.

Squeaky
2008? - 5/19/16

Gotcha Day: 11/23/10

Squeaky was my first NY cat. She was a stray that was fed by the liquor store owner next to my office. I would often sit on the back steps and talk with her at lunch - she squeaked instead of meowed. She had a couple litters of kittens over the course of a year and eventually disappeared. I asked the lady if she had seen her and found out that Squeaky had been spayed and given to the upstairs tenants. I randomly said if they ever changed their mind, I would take her. In less than 2 weeks there was a note on my windshield that I could have her - they hadn't even named her yet. She was very appreciative as she always had to sit in my lap or be near me no matter what I was doing. Squeaky wouldn't bother quilts I had layed out on the floor over night - she waited until morning so I could watch her take a running leap with a twist to rearrange my blocks. The doll bed was purchased with Squeaky in mind - it needed to be sturdy and low to the ground for my fat Dolly.

Midgie
9/14/99 - 9/22/15

One year my brother's family was going to Disney for a couple of weeks and asked if I could take their cat while they were gone. They came home from Florida but never asked for their cat and I never offered her back - it took forever for the boys to even notice she was gone. I eventually changed her name to Midgie - what else do you call a tiny 6 pound cat? Midgie also had to be every where I was and could talk a blue streak. It would get a little crowded on the couch with Squeaky and Midgie both vying for lap space. Luckily Pepper was more of a floor kind of guy.

Zorro
Gotcha Day: September 2013

Zorro took his time before adopting me. He was a stray in the neighborhood for an entire summer. He became friendlier and would sit in my lap. As winter approached I decided to bring him inside, except he did not want to be inside only as my other cats were. It was a long battle but we soon worked out a truce that he would be an innie-outie kitty and we trained each other so that he rings a bell when he wants out. He's quite smart - too smart if we are being honest. Over the last 5 years he has become increasingly friendlier, even enjoying sitting on my lap every day for the last few weeks. He seems to be happiest as an only child.

Little Boy Bleu
2010? - 3/18/17
Gotcha Day: September 2016

Little Boy Bleu was another stray in the neighborhood. He was very shy and it took an entire summer before I even got a good look at his beautiful face as he was always slinking away along the property lines. We finally decided he was a Mitted Seal Point Ragdoll! A gorgeous boy who sadly only lived with me for a few months. He was another grateful kitty who loved to be in my lap and wasn't bothered by whatever hexie project I was working on over the top of him.

Have you picked up that all my cats have found me? Picked me?
And for that I am forever thankful!

Feline Friday - 3/17/17

There are lots of photos to share for Feline Friday and HeLP today so Mommma separated the posts, altho they will share one linky party. Be sure to check out HeLP HERE!

On Sunday, Momma put me on the ottoman with my brother. What was she thinking?

Zorro! Really? In front of the camera? You've got NO class!!

Monday morning Momma used the pillowcase trick to get me in to the PTU. How did I fall for that one again??!! She said I was breathing too fast.

There was no end of indignities at the Vet, including checking my rear tem-purrr-ature and Xrays.

BTW - They matched the tile to my furs. How nice!!

The lady doctor  gave me an anti-inflamatory shot and thought I would improve quickly.
Sadly I was much worse the next day. I stopped eating after the vet appointment and my breathing got very labored.

On Wednesday, Momma took me to work before and after another appointment. She set a stool right next to her chair with a pillowcase that smelled like Momma.

But I chose to sit in my Prisoner Transport Unit.

The lady doctor took another xray and a CBC blood test. Her best guess is that I have asthma. Supposedly kitties get it in the winter and the drywall dust from bedroom renovations probably didn't help. I have prednisone pills to take for 10 days but I don't like taking them. I'm quite lethargic and I'm still not eating despite Momma's best efforts. I've lost nearly a pound this week.

Momma put me on the tables today to offer treats.
No thanks.

Momma called the lady again this morning about me still not eating despite the appetite enhancer I was administered on Wednesday. The lady suggested chicken flavored baby food.

I. am. not. a. baby. I'm 7!!

She forced some in my mouth at lunch today and I only gummed half of it back out on to my furs (she's threatening a bib before she forces more on me for dinner) but it tastes ok. I'll consider more for dinner altho I hear she also bought turkey flavor too...

Design Wall Monday - 3/6/17

Can you taste it yet?
I certainly can!

What am I possibly talking about? Well I can taste finishing this quilt...

I've got probably 13 half-hexies to finish attaching and then I need to attach the top border to the mothership. Then this baby will be in the finished pile. Woot Woot!

I've got half the half-hexies sewn in to the top and bottom borders.
The top border isn't attached to the quilt yet so when my back gives out from
painting ceilings and sitting at the table to work on the mothership, I can move to
the couch to work on the border.

Funny how the parts of the quilt sans papers lay so much flatter.

The models are not sure if they are friend or foe at the moment.
This may or may not have something to do with the 'nip fest last night...

I've removed the papers from the sides to reduce the weight of the quilt.
I think I'm going to wait to trim the sides straight until after it's been quilted.
I'm also removing the papers from the top and the bottom as I fill in the half-hexies.

Feline Friday - 3/3/17

It sure was nice of Melvina to have carpeted the bathrooms in Casa Grande before Momma bought our house.

Why she ONLY carpeted the bathrooms in a huge house is the Everlasting Gobstopper question...

I'm good enough,
I'm smart enough,
and doggone it,
people like me!

In the end it doesn't matter why cuz the carpet matches my furs perfectly!!

Design Floor Tuesday - 2/28/17

I've been spending most of my spare time (other than bedroom renovations) working on the owl quilt.

I layed it out this morning to count how many more hexies I need to finish the bottom row and fill out the top when it gets attached.

I know you said not to play with the papers, Momma - I'm just holding it for you

The magic number is 12. If I just add the 12, the half hexies to top and bottom and trim the sides straight then the quilt will be 70" square. It doesn't appear square to me yet, despite my model's best efforts.

My dilemma is if I want to leave it square or add another couple rows to top and bottom to get it to be rectangular.

I've got 27 inches of fabric left so I am sure there is enough fabric left to keep adding hexies.

Momma says I'm a poser.
I say I'm practicing to be a spokescat.

Adding the hexies is not the actual dilemma but the concept that the center will always appear rectangular cuz it's a different color. I am currently wishing I had put a single row of a different fabric across the middle of the top and bottom borders just for the effect of drawing the eye up and down the neutral center. There is NO way that is happening now, I'll just file that idea for another quilt.

Momma also says I'm a pretty boy.
And I agree!!!

Feline Friday - 2/24/17

Hey Ho - Bleu Here!!!

Obviously this is not a current picture. It's been in the 60s all week (highly unusual for the end of February!) so the snow in this picture from last week is loooooooooong gone. I've even managed to sneak out the door a couple times this week. I never got past the porch but it was
supercalifragilisticexpialidocious to be outside again. So many smells and the plants trying to peek out like it's spring or something. It was fab!!

Anyway...what I really wanted to tell you is that Z let me give his forehead a little bath twice in the last couple days when he was coming in the window. There was no fuss or muss. I know - I almost fainted myself! I tried to get him to return the favor last night by giving him a little head bump but it was a no go. I am not deterred and will keep trying.

Double Feature: Feline Friday & HeLP for Hexie-aholics - 2/17/17

Double Features don't happen all that often but here we are celebrating not only your favorite felines but Momma's favorite quilting technique. One would have thought that would have garnered us a special breakfast but no. such. luck.

Last night Momma finished attaching the third border to the mothership.

Then she did this funny little happy dance. It was weird and exhausting. I needed a nap.

Momma does have the fourth side kinda made. She's widening it before she attaches it though. Then she'll just need to widen the bottom border. Her fingers are crossed it will be ALL finished by the March Hexie Linky Party. Me too cuz it's hard getting any lap time in when she's working on these big borders.

Momma has also been prepping some pieced hexie parts to use as leader enders. I think she said this pile has 3 yellow and 4 blue sets. If you remember, Momma wants to take these camping with her this summer so she's got a *lot* of prepping to do.

This is her next one to prep. It's the "paddle" design...What ever that means.

OK, so I hear that Momma has promised pictures of the latest Zorro The Spokescat sighting. I can't believe it but here goes...

Momma was in Pier 1 and saw this pretty platter. I think it's kinda girly with Z's pink glasses but he keeps telling me that he was trying to be incognito or anything for kibble. He keeps changing his story...

Momma doesn't use platters much so she decided to get the mug. Do I really have to look at his mug on a mug all the time? Geesh. Real life isn't enough I gotta look at the girly version too??!!??

To top it all off - He even has tissue packets available! Momma thought they would be funny little gifts. I say go ahead, be my guest, blow all your gooey boogers on his pretty little face.

Now you tell me...How come I can't get any spokescat gigs?

Help me out. I'm a nice looking mancat! Got any gigs I can get in on??

Ok Hexie-ologists and fellow Felines - we're only having one linky today. Link early and link often and have a fantastice furry Friday!!!

Design Wall Monday - 2/13/17

Have you ever found such a good deal that you just couldn't pass it up and figured out a way to make it happen? It feels like that just keeps happening and happening to me...

Generally when I buy quilting supplies it's paid for with quilting "income" - not so recently since the deals were just too good to wait until I had the money. My savings account is a little thinner than it was last month but I've got some sales coming up so I have no doubt I will repay myself soon enough.

First, it was the sale on wide backs down in Addison, NY at the store of a friend's sister. I bought 4 fatbacks.

Then the same friend told me that Joann's was having a 50% off sale on batting. How could I pass that up two days ago when my schedule suddenly cleared??!! Joanne's is 60 miles away! I bought 4 batting packages.

All my favorite basic colors!!!
Grey Master Piece for piecing and King Tut colors for quilting.

And there was also the 25% off sale at Superior Threads (the only threads I use) last  week. They arrived today!

Everything I've bought recently has been bought with a purpose - that stack of quilt tops I posted recently. Now I just need to squeeze in some time to get them spray basted. I am hoping that I'll be able to get a lot of that done this weekend, since it's a three day weekend.  Wish me luck!

The first quilt to be stitched will be En Provence!! I'll be using the purple and neutral threads to get me started. Who knows what other colors I'll be using...I'm waiting for the quilt to speak to me...

Please ignore the mess!
I Spy a pile of quilts and tops on my great great grandfather's trunk, a Bonnie mystery
on the wall, hexie borders ont he table in front of the tv, Birdie vision
(my current fav) on the couch and a fluffernutter on his dolly bed.
For anyone stopping in from Bonnie's linky party - check here to see how I basted my quilt.

Feline Friday - 2/3/17

Oh. My. Gobsmacking. Kibble!

Zorro! Zorro!

Look what I found! A dolly bed!

And did you know?? It's just for me!! I know this cuz Momma calls me her Mr. Raggy Doll.

Dude - that bed's been here longer than you have...way before you introoded on my turf...

Tshirt Quilt update

I know I promised pictures of my hike at Bath National Cemetery this week, but Janet inspired me to work on my tshirt quilt and so I did...

I admit, the top has been done for many years - maybe since I moved back from Miami in 2008 or maybe just shortly after that. It's 88" square.

It was fun to revisit these tshirts - tatting, Circle K, Ballons over Letchworth, Wagga Wagga/Yerong Creek, Ronald McDonald House, Dance for Teddi, Nashville, The Miami Circle, El Valle/Panama.

Hmm...I even made the binding already ...

I also admit to buying the flannel for the back about 4 or 5 years ago. I had even gotten so far as cutting 8 of the 9 pieces to size already - I just needed to cut the center. And then it was put back in a drawer to be ignored for years. It only took a couple hours of dedicated time last night (despite the fluffernutters assistance) to get this into one piece.

The original plan was to not use a batting. It's a heavy quilt with the tshirts and interfacing and then the flannel for the back, so I thought it would be mighty warm enough. When I look at the quilt now, there is a lot more fabric versus tshirt material. What do you think? Will it be ok without batting?

Either way, it's now been placed on top of the pile of 'tops with backs'. If I still go with no batting, and this weekend works out, I can get the top 2 basted.

My other exciting news is that I finished adding on the second side this morning. Wooo Hoo!!

I've got an EMT seminar on Saturday and it's retreat weekend #1 - Hopefully I can get a lot more done...

Feline Friday - 1/20/17

Momma was making neutral 4patches last night for her mystery quilt.
I thought I would give her a paw or two...

She says I'm a neutral myself but I have NO idea what she's talking about.

I'm pretty sure that Z doesn't think I'm neutral.
I'm pretty decisive where that dude comes in to play.

Eventually I just couldn't think about what she said anymore and moved to the "drawer".

Momma says I'm a little chunkers to be on this drawer but I was not neutral on this item either. I WAS going to sit on it and I WAS going to play with her rulers.
